Concrete for Viera builds and add-ons

Viera is a master-planned community, and a lot of what gets poured here goes into new homes in planned neighborhoods. Once the builder is gone, the jobs get smaller: a wider driveway, a patio, a pad for a shed or a generator.

County permits, filed in Viera

Viera isn't a city. The state lists Viera East and Viera West as census-designated places (Florida Department of State), so building permits here come from Brevard County, which issues them for the unincorporated parts of the county (Brevard County). The county's Planning and Development Department is in Viera itself.

Contractors can apply online. If you're building your own patio as an owner-builder, the county says you have to file the application in person.

New homes run on the builder's schedule

Some houses go in as a monolithic slab, footers and slab in one pour; others pour footers first and the slab later. Either way the driveway usually comes near the end, and each pour is a different amount on a different day, with the amounts coming from the builder's plans. A site-mix truck fits that well. It mixes what each pour needs and stops. Slabs, footers and foundations and concrete for contractors cover that work.

After the closing

Once a house is lived in, the requests change. Extending the driveway for a third car. A patio off the back door. A pad for a shed. Those are short loads, which is the kind of pour a site-mix truck handles without fuss. See driveways and flatwork and short loads.

If your neighborhood has an HOA, ask whether it wants to approve the change before you book the pour. County approval and HOA approval are separate things, and you may need both.

Questions people ask

Is Viera part of Melbourne?

Not for permits. Viera addresses often use Melbourne as the mailing city, but Viera is unincorporated Brevard County, so the county handles permits, not the City of Melbourne.

Do you deliver to builders?

Yes. We deliver to builders and contractors as well as homeowners. Call (321) 751-6666 with the address, what's being poured and the quantities from the plans.

How much concrete does a patio take?

Length times width times thickness, in feet, divided by 27. A 12 by 16 foot patio at 4 inches thick works out to about 2.4 cubic yards before the margin. The yardage guide has the full method.
