Driveways and flatwork

Concrete for driveways, walkways and patios

Flatwork is anything poured flat on the ground. Driveways, sidewalks, patios, the apron where the drive meets the street. We bring the concrete and mix it at the job, so it goes into the forms fresh and the amount can follow what the forms actually take.

Why driveways are hard to order for

On paper a driveway is simple. Length times width times depth. On the ground the base is never perfectly flat, and a low spot near the garage or a thicker edge along the street can eat concrete nobody planned for.

Mixing at the job helps there. If the drive takes more than the math said, the truck can usually keep going. You don't stop halfway and wait for another load while the first half sets.

Before the pour

Most driveway problems start in the dirt.

  • Brevard ground is mostly sand, and loose sand settles. Get the base graded and compacted before the forms go in.
  • Pitch the drive so water runs to the street or the yard, not back toward the garage.
  • Look at where the drive meets the road. The apron may sit in the city or county right-of-way, and some places want a permit or an inspection for it.
  • Plan the control joints. They give cracks a straight line to follow instead of wandering across the slab.

Pouring flatwork in the heat

Wide flat pours are where Florida heat shows up most. A driveway has a lot of surface out in the sun and wind, and the crew has to keep moving before it sets.

Morning pours help. So does having enough people for the size of the slab. If storms are in the forecast, have plastic ready or move the date, and call us as early as you can if you need to reschedule.

Questions people ask

How thick should my driveway be?

That's up to your contractor and any city or county requirements, and it can depend on what's going to drive on it. Give us the thickness when you call and we'll work out the amount from there.

Can you bring concrete for a sidewalk or patio too?

Yes. Sidewalks, walkways and patios are flatwork too. Smaller ones may fit under short loads.

Can your truck drive on my old driveway?

A loaded mixer is heavy. If the old driveway is thin or cracked, or there are pavers along the way, tell us so we can find another spot to set up.
