Pouring beside a finished house
On a built street the truck shares space with a mailbox, irrigation heads, a lawn with sprinkler lines under it and the neighbor's car. Before the pour, walk the path the truck will take and pick where it will park.
A loaded mixer is heavy. NRMCA says a loaded drum truck weighs about 80,000 pounds and may not be able to get across loose dirt or residential curbs (NRMCA CIP 31), and a volumetric truck is no lightweight either. Plan on the truck staying on the street or the driveway. If the slab is behind the house, figure out how the concrete gets back there, by wheelbarrow or a power buggy, before the truck shows up.
Small pours, where a bad guess hurts most
Widening a driveway, adding a parking pad, pouring a patio off the back door. Jobs like these are usually short loads, and on a short load a measuring mistake is a big share of the job. Order a set amount from a plant, come up a few wheelbarrows short, and one edge of the slab waits on another delivery.
A site-mix truck mixes at the forms, so it can keep going until they're full as long as there's material on board. You still want a good number going in. The yardage guide shows how to get one, and driveways and flatwork covers that kind of pour.
County rules, plus the HOA
Suntree isn't one of Brevard's incorporated cities (Florida Department of State), so building permits come from Brevard County. Contractors can file online. Owner-builders have to file in person (Brevard County).
If your street has an HOA, read its rules on driveways and patios too. The county permit and the HOA's approval are separate.
