Site-mixed concrete

Site-mixed concrete, made fresh at your job

Our trucks don't arrive with a drum of concrete that was batched across town. They carry cement, sand, stone and water in separate bins and mix it right at your forms. The truck runs until you have what you need. Then it stops.

How a volumetric truck works

A regular ready-mix truck is a turning drum. The concrete gets batched at a plant, loaded wet and kept rolling on the drive to your job. Whatever you ordered the day before is what's in the drum.

A volumetric truck is built differently. Cement, sand and stone ride in their own compartments, dry, with water in a tank. At the job the truck meters them into a mixing auger at the back, and fresh concrete comes down the chute. When the forms are full, our driver shuts it off. Anything that wasn't mixed stays in the truck.

What changes for you on pour day

Mixing at the job takes a few headaches out of ordering concrete.

  • The concrete is fresh. It's mixed right before it goes into the forms, not loaded at a plant and driven across the county.
  • The amount follows the job. If you measured a little short, the truck keeps mixing. If you measured long, it stops and nothing extra gets made.
  • A site that's running behind is less of a problem. While your crew catches up, the materials are still dry in the truck.
  • Got more than one small pour on the property? Tell us when you call and we'll talk through how to handle it.

Getting the site ready

Most of what makes a pour go well happens before our truck pulls up.

  • Forms set, braced and checked
  • Reinforcement in place, and any inspection your permit calls for already passed
  • A firm route for a heavy truck, away from sprinkler lines, thin concrete and lawn that's soft from rain
  • Enough people and tools to place the concrete as it comes off the chute
  • Wheelbarrows ready if the chute can't reach every corner

Brevard weather and your pour

Summer is the tricky season. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast here, and a hard rain on concrete that hasn't set can rough up the surface. Heat matters too. Concrete stiffens a lot faster on a July afternoon than on a cool morning in January, so plenty of people book summer pours early and keep plastic sheeting close.

Questions people ask

What is site-mixed concrete?

Concrete that's mixed at your job instead of at a plant. Our volumetric trucks carry cement, sand, stone and water separately and combine them at the chute, so it comes out fresh.

Do I need to know exactly how much concrete I need?

A rough number helps us plan, so measure length, width and depth before you call. It doesn't have to be perfect. The truck mixes as you pour, and if you come up a little short it can usually keep going.

How do I schedule a pour?

Call us. We'll ask for the address, what you're pouring, rough measurements and the day you're aiming for. Summer weather can move a pour, so keep a backup day in mind.
